Mercedes A-Class

Okay so we all know about the elk test and the fact the weird looking A-Class had as much stability as a Moose on acid after 10 pints of Stella. But did you know this car is the most fun I've had behind the wheel since scaring Belgian hitch-hikers witless in the Lake District in my mothers Mini Clubman about 12 years ago! The various tecno solutions those men at Mercedes employed to cure the rollover problem mean that now you can throw the car about like a maniac without having to worry about any of the four wheels leaving the ground. The clutchless manual is a real hoot once you get use to changing gear without using your left leg, which is very strange at first.

As far as inside goes this car is a genuine Tardis and is more flexible than a Russian gymnast when it comes to seating & luggage combinations. You feel as though you're in a car two-class sizes bigger, and it's very comfortable. The overall feeling is high quality and youthful (if you go for the zany colour options). There are a number of typical Mercedes touches such as automatic dipping rear view mirror and automatic locking/unlocking of doors for security in towns to name but two.

There is only one catch, the size of the boot means the A-Class is not really a suitable if you regularly have to travel with more than three people plus their luggage. But I would wholeheartedly recommend this car to those couples & singles out there who are young at heart, want something different, appreciate quality and have a few bob (it's not cheap).

Don't bother with the entry level Classic model, or the 1.4 litre engine. But, if you want the funkiest wheels on the block, blow about £28K on loopy 1.9 version with AMG bodykit a personalised leather interior and you won't be disappointed. (TE)
